  5. Q: I'm running Windows 3.11 or Windows for Workgroups 3.11, and my
  6.    system hangs when I run UZPower.
  7.  
  8.     A: There are problems with the 3.11 version of both Windows
  9.        products as it relates to Advanced Power Management. See the
  10.        LIMITATIONS section of UZPOWER.TXT for details.

  15. Q: Why does UZPower pop up an error message with "No Advanced Power
  16.     Management!"?

  18.     A: Your computer does not have APM. See the LIMITATIONS section
  19.        in UZPOWER.TXT.

  24. Q: When UZPower runs, it does not switch from the initial icon to any
  25.    other. Also, it does not pop up any warning when the battery
  26.    goes low.

  28.     A: This is because the APM does not correctly indicate that it
  29.        has enabled APM (test #2 in APMEXAM fails).  Version 1.20
  30.        fixes this by ignoring this condition.

  35. Q: After displaying a "LOW battery" warning, why is the needle still on
  36.     high?
  37.  
  38.     A: UZPower only does what the APM BIOS of your computer tells it
  39.        to. In this case, the BIOS says that battery charge is still
  40.        high after indicating that it went low. Please verify this by
  41.        running APMEXAM immediately after the LOW battery warning, or
  42.        display the "Control Panel" Power settings.  If they do say
  43.        that the battery status is "High", it is a problem with your
  44.        laptop, and you should report this to the vendor. In either
  45.        case, please report the behavior to us.

  50. Q: Why does UZPower not give any guesses on remaining battery time?
  51.  
  52.     A: If the APM BIOS on your laptop does not provide this info
  53.        (test #6 and 7 in APMEXAM), then UZPower has to guess. It
  54.        can only guess, when it knows for sure that the battery is
  55.        full (otherwise the guess would not be too accurate). The
  56.        only way it knows the battery is full is if the computer has
  57.        been charging for 2 consecutive hours, or if you tell it so
  58.        with the "Full Now" menu item. Then, when the battery LOW
  59.        indication comes on, UZPower will remember how long it took
  60.        to get there, and display it the next time it knows the
  61.        battery is full. Anytime that UZPower guesses, it will
  62.        display the word "approximate" (or "approx.").

  66. Q: UZPower does not give accurate guesses at remaining time.

  68.     A: If your APM does not provide it, UZPower has to guess, and
  69.        puts the word "approximate" in all displays. The only way
  70.        to guess is to extrapolate from past performance, and this
  71.        is exactly what it does: it remembers the past 5 durations
  72.        to get from a FULL battery indication to the LOW battery
  73.        level, and takes an average of the 5 for the next guess.

  77. Q: Why do UZful Software users have to be licensed?

  79.     A: In contrast to the traditional retail approach, shareware
  80.        gives the user the software to try before paying.

  82.        We need to prevent  unlimited  free usage of our software,
  83.        because it is the only hope of making a living in selling
  84.        inexpensive, useful software. With this type of software, it
  85.        is common for potential customers to "forget" to register.
  86.        In an  ideal world  we would not have to  restrict our
  87.        distribution.  In  this one, our  licensing mechanism
  88.        encourages a choice, after a reasonable trial period, on
  89.        whether you want to continue using the software or not.

  91.        Instead of relying on nag screens ("nagware"), limited
  92.        demonstration versions ("crippleware") or other (costly?)
  93.        incentives (manuals, support, ...) to encourage users to
  94.        register, we believe these approaches are not in your best
  95.        interest, because they are annoying, do not allow you to
  96.        fully explore the product before paying, or cost you more.

  98.        With our no-nonsense approach, you get the fully functional
  99.        product before you lay out a penny. In fact, the registered
  100.        version and the software you have in your hands are
  101.        identical, except for the permanent license key, which we
  102.        will issue to you upon payment.  You pay only for what you
  103.        already have, nothing more, nothing less.

  107. Q: It is cumbersome to fill out the registration form, and to plug in
  108.    the license key. Isn't there an easier way?
  109.  
  110.        A: We're sorry, it is the only way for us to continue developing
  111.           low-cost software for you, the user.  The 5-10 minutes that
  112.           it will take to fill out and mail the registration form and a
  113.           check, and to replace the evaluation key with the new license
  114.           key, will ensure your continued enjoyment of our time-saving
  115.           tools.

  119. Q: Do I need to buy the optional floppy?
  120.  
  121.     A: No. Upon payment, we will e-mail (or postal mail) you the
  122.        license key to enable  continued  use of the product. The
  123.        enclosed instructions will ask you to use a text editor to
  124.        cut and paste the license key into the existing software.
  125.  
  126.        The  optional  floppy  contains the  latest version of the
  127.        product. Our license provides free limited upgrades (that is,
  128.        if you  download  a newer  version  of the product, it will
  129.        continue to work with the license key you have, and you will
  130.        not need to reregister). However, it may well be worth it to
  131.        purchase the floppy, if your version is several months old.
  132.        If there is no later version to the one registered for, we
  133.        will wait with the floppy until the next version is released.
  134.        In addition, it will already contain the license key issued
  135.        to you, and will  include  evaluation  copies  of our other
  136.        products, saving you the cost and time of downloading.
